Jim Grogan Countryside and Wildlife Award - 2011

The 2011 Award, the first, has been presented to Evie Mulligan.

Certificate painted by Barry Hillier, Trustee.

On Monday, July 25th 2011 there was a special whole school assembly at Tarvin Primary School.  Headmaster Andrew Davies introduced the proceedings by outlining what the school had been doing related to woodland over the year.  Walks,  bird boxes (one with a CCTV to the classroom), cross-country running, Forest School with Broomheath Plantation and more.  He thanked the Trustees who had taken each of the 7 classes for a guided tour of the woodland.  Two pupils then presented a thank you card to Stuart Exell, chairman of the Trustees.  Inside the card were seven collages, each created by a class and signed on the back by each member of the class.

Andrew then introduced Andrew Brown, who had produced the book.

Andrew explained that he was a former pupil of the school and had become a bookbinder after being inspired by seeing another.  It is a rare skill these days and he said how much pleasure it had given him to produce the book entirely by hand.  The book will be shown to all the children so that they may see the craftsmanship.

Chairman of the Trust, Stuart Exell, said that everyone was there because it was the fulfillment of Jim’s dream.  Jim loved children and wanted them to enjoy the woodland, which could stimulate their interest possibly to become the trustees and volunteers of the future.  There were three key aspects to what Jim had done and these were important for the children to note.  1. He had imagination and a Big Idea.  2. He produced a Plan for the long term and worked carefully towards it.  3. He Built a Team; he taught people a lot but also learnt from them.  He would have loved to be present.

The 2011 winner was announced as Evie Mulligan of Year 2.

She was presented with the above certificate together with the plaque and book token by Sheila Grogan at a whole school assembly held on Monday, July 25th 2011.  Click to see the citation, the first of 125 that will eventually be held in the book.  Sheila was accompanied by her son, Kevin, and daughter, Helen.
