Green Flag Award announcement:
Special Award for Innovation 2010 / 11
The Special Awards for Innovation highlight the winners which have made changes to bring outstanding benefits to both their sites and their local communities. These sites are inspirational for their commitment to continuous improvement.
Innovation is classified as something which is new to that particular site (it must have been introduced in the last three years). It is not necessarily dependent upon a large financial investment; it must simply bring improvement to the community’s experience of the site.
This is the citation:
Tarvin Community Woodland, Chester Tarvin Community Woodland Trust
This trust has converted a thirteen acre area of unused neglected land into a community woodland asset. Working with the Highways Agency, local and parish councils and the education authority, they applied for an adapted license to transfer this public asset into the hands of the community. This award has been given for innovation in sustainability after obtaining a 125 year lease for ‘green management purposes’. In order to obtain this lease the trust was required to prove for two years that they had sufficient funds and community involvement and that they were able to reach a satisfactory standard of woodland management.
The area encounters virtually no vandalism or litter, which the group believes is due to the high level of community involvement.
