There are several hedges associated with the woodland.  Firstly, there are the hedges that border the woodland on Broomheath Lane and Hockenhull Lane.  Secondly, there are the historic “field hedges” that were there long before housing estates and by-passes were thought of.  The current state of all these hedges owes a lot to local resident John Plant who is a hedge layer.  Over the years John and his assistants (formerly the late Keith Bonser and currently, John Sim) have progressively layed the hedges until they are now in good condition and under routine annual maintenance.  John has won several awards for his work in the woodland; see where he was recognised.  Here are the various hedges on October 17th 2013 after their annual “haircuts”, given by the band of volunteers that turns out every Thursday, whatever the weather.  Click on a thumbnail below for an enlargement.
